Frequently Asked Questions
Q: What is the difference between SMD and through-hole discrete components?
A: SMD (Surface-Mount Device) components are soldered directly onto the surface of a PCB, making them ideal for compact, high-density designs and automated assembly. Through-hole (DIP) components have wire leads that pass through holes in the PCB and are often preferred for prototyping, high-power applications, or situations where mechanical strength is important. We carry both SMD and through-hole resistors, capacitors, and other passive components to suit any design requirement.
Q: What does MLCC stand for, and why are multilayer ceramic capacitors so widely used?
A: MLCC stands for Multilayer Ceramic Capacitor. These capacitors are widely used because they offer excellent stability, low equivalent series resistance (ESR), and a wide range of capacitance values in a very small package. They are ideal for decoupling, bypassing, and filtering in virtually all electronic circuits. Our MLCC selection includes popular sizes like 0201, 0603, and 0805 in both X7R and other dielectric types.
Q: How do I choose the right resistor tolerance for my circuit?
A: Resistor tolerance indicates how much the actual resistance can deviate from the labeled value. For general-purpose digital circuits, 5% tolerance carbon film resistors are typically sufficient. For precision analog circuits, signal conditioning, or measurement applications, 1% metal film resistors are recommended. We offer resistors in both 1% and 5% tolerances across a wide range of wattages and package types.
Q: Are bulk reels of SMD components suitable for hand soldering?
A: Yes — while bulk reels are primarily designed for pick-and-place automated assembly, individual components can absolutely be hand-soldered, especially in larger packages like 0603 and 0805. Smaller packages such as 0201 require a steady hand and fine-tipped soldering equipment or a reflow oven. Bulk reels are a cost-effective choice for both prototyping and production when you need a large quantity of a specific value.
Q: What is a ferrite bead and when should I use one in my PCB design?
A: A ferrite bead is a passive component used to suppress high-frequency electromagnetic interference (EMI) on power and signal lines. It acts as a low-pass filter, passing DC and low-frequency signals while attenuating high-frequency noise. Ferrite beads are commonly placed on power supply lines close to ICs, on USB data lines, and on any trace that may be susceptible to or emitting high-frequency noise. Our 0805 chip ferrite beads are rated at 100MHz and available in current ratings from 2A to 6A.
